Over the Christmas break I road-tested my new 50mm fixed focal length lens, and took to getting some portrait shots of some of my family and friends. I prefer natural light to flash when taking photos of people, if sunlight is available. The great thing about the UK this winter has certainly been the light. We have been quite fortunate. Temperatures have been much colder meaning  the weather has been dryer too, and that means, inexplicably, in a land notorious for its dreary winter wet, the sun has been out more often than not. Given the sun is lower in the sky, then the light is not as harsh and it highlights your subject perfectly. So, below are a couple of shots, taken in glorious winter sunlight. Long may it last!

To make a final point about how great the light has been this winter, the last photo, I close this entry on, is a shot of a tree silhouette at sunset, taken on Boxing Day, while out walking through the beautiful countryside near Henley in Arden, in Warwickshire.
